Holy Island: A DCI Ryan Mystery (The DCI Ryan Mysteries Book 1) by [Ross, LJ]

Description…..

Detective Chief Inspector Ryan retreats to Holy Island seeking sanctuary when he is forced to take sabbatical leave from his duties as a homicide detective. A few days before Christmas, his peace is shattered and he is thrust back into the murky world of murder when a young woman is found dead amongst the ancient ruins of the nearby Priory.

When former local girl Dr Anna Taylor arrives back on the island as a police consultant, old memories swim to the surface making her confront her difficult past. She and Ryan struggle to work together to hunt a killer who hides in plain sight, while pagan ritual and small-town politics muddy the waters of their investigation.

Murder and mystery are peppered with a sprinkling of romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit set on the spectacular Northumbrian island of Lindisfarne, cut off from the English mainland by a tidal causeway.

My review…..

I know I am probably in a minority having only just got around to reading Holy Island (The DCI Ryan Mysteries, Book 1). I know this is a very popular series!

L J Ross very kindly sent me her new book, Cragside (The DCI Ryan Mysteries, Book 6) and I’m a bit of a stickler for reading a series in order, so I thought it was about time I started this one and I know exactly what I’ve been missing out on now!

DCI Ryan is a very intriguing character. Good looking, but not arrogant. Understandably standoffish at times, but likable. I was drawn to him immediately. He has been living in Lindisfarne since having to take leave, but is soon thrown back into work when the body of a young girl called Lucy is found dead on the island. Former local resident, Dr Anna Taylor is called in as a police consultant. The chemistry between them is quite obvious early on although they act like they don’t like each other to start with.

As the investigation into Lucy’s murder progresses, we learn more and more about certain local residents, who aren’t all as they first seem, and it’s easy to start suspecting everyone. There are some evil characters in this story and all are seemingly normal to begin with. Ryan and his colleagues have no idea of the danger they’re facing.

The twists and turns in this story are plentiful and the suspense had me hooked from start to finish and kept me guessing the whole way through. I didn’t even pretend to have this one sussed at any point! That ending!!

The setting sounds amazing and is now on my list of places to visit, hopefully before too long.

Holy Island is a brilliantly written police procedural which has everything I love in a book. It’s fast-paced, beautifully descriptive, with excellent characterisation and a storyline that kept me reading ‘just one more chapter’. There’s also a bit of romance and, even better, it’s the first in the series and I have another 5 to look forward to!
